Pet owners across the country can find cat food shelves bare or with limited choices.

WNCN reported that it started last year when supplies of canned dog food were hard to come by. At the time, it was difficult to find beef and lamb flavors for Fido.

But that shortage has extended to cat food, the news station reported.

North Carolina isn’t alone in experiencing pet food shortages.

Canned food was non-existent at Pet Smart stores around Los Angeles in early March, KTTV reported.

An Iowa supply chain professor said this is happening even at retailers like Chewy.

Jonathan Phares said supply chain issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic are to blame and the problems have two different reasons, KCCI reported.

First, the meat used in cat food is scarce.

Most of the popular foods come from overseas and have been delayed due to shipping issues, KTTV reported. Plants that make both human and animal food also prioritize human food.

The price of meat has also increased in recent months, according to KTTV.

Second, the aluminum used to package processed cat food is also in short supply, KCCI reported.

Chewy and other companies have switched from cans to pouches to compensate for this, KTTV reported.

Finally, there was another side effect of the pandemic that people may not realize is that it contributes to the lack of available food.

Cat adoption has increased during and after the pandemic, Phares told KCCI.

Most pet adoptions increased during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. They have since dropped, except in the case of cats. Cats are still being adopted at the same rate as during the pandemic, KCCI reported.
