S’pore minimizes the impact of the chicken shortage in M’sia

SINGAPORE: Singapore is closely monitoring the situation of its chicken imports from Malaysia and working with stakeholders, such as importers, to minimize the impact of the chicken supply shortage on the causeway.

“For example, they will activate their supply chains to increase imports of chilled chicken from alternative sources, increase imports of frozen chicken from existing non-Malaysian suppliers or tap into their poultry stocks,” the agency said. Singapore Food Service (SFA) in its Facebook Update.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced on Monday that exports of up to 3.6 million chickens will be halted from June 1 until chicken prices and production stabilize.

This was a short-term measure for the continuing problem of chicken shortages.

“While there may be temporary interruptions in the supply of chilled chicken, frozen chicken options remain available to alleviate the shortfall.

“We strongly encourage consumers to play their part by being open to changing choices within and between food groups – such as eating frozen chicken instead of chilled – as well as other sources of meat products. We also advise consumers to buy only what they need,” the SFA said.

According to the SFA, around 34% of Singapore’s chicken imports in 2021 come from Malaysia – almost all of which are imported as live chickens which are slaughtered and chilled in Singapore -.

The SFA is a statutory board under the republic’s Department of Sustainability and Environment responsible for overseeing food safety and suitability in Singapore. – Bernama
