Hundreds of jobs available for veterans, their spouses

MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN — After returning from the military, it’s not always easy for veterans to find work, so on the second floor of the Hilton hotel in Midtown, an opportunity expected Thursday for this unique group. All they had to do was walk in. They were greeted by over 40 companies waiting to hire people.

Recruit Military’s Veterans Career Fair, a company that connects employers with military job seekers, helps veterans leaving the military.

Chris Stevens, the senior vice president, says companies are also looking to hire veteran spouses.

“Husband or wife can be deployed and the real hero is dealing with the broken car, the house, the sick kids, trying to get to school, etc.,” Stevens said. “They are really adaptable in unique situations. They have proven it over and over and over again. »

Companies range from Amazon to Mattress Firm to Secret Service. There were even law enforcement agencies recruiting in California and Maryland.

ABC Supply is a wholesale construction supplier supplying contractors, builders and roofers nationwide and Mike Anderson; the Western New England district manager says they love hiring veterans.

“They have leadership skills that we’re looking for where they can lead a team, lead a team, engage the team like they do with their background in the military,” Anderson said.

Edgar Irizarry is currently on a COVID mission with the National Guard and was browsing Thursday to see which employer can provide what he is looking for.

“Better pay, better benefits of course,” Irizarry said. “It really is a career, not a job. This is the road I’m headed for. Once I get to this seller, if he says the right things, maybe I’ll make a choice.

With high rates of homelessness and suicide among veterans, the group Disabled American Veterans sponsored the event and was there to provide resources on services and benefits.

The career fair is the last in-person event in New York for Recruit Military this year, but they are hosting a virtual national recruiting event next month on May 24.
