Gasoline prices jumped 20 cents at select locations in Chautauqua County on Monday, hitting $4.40 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, including taxes.
Just last week, the average price of a gallon of gas in the Jamestown area was $3.75, according to AAA East’s Gas Report. Additionally, gasoline was around $2.84 per gallon the week of March 8, 2021.
Locally, prices broke above the $4 mark last Thursday. Part of the increase is due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
AAA said the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $4.06, a “staggering” 45 cents more than a week ago, 62 cents more than a month ago and $1.30 more than a year ago.
The national average had not been this high since July 2008.
“Increased gas demand and a reduction in total supply are contributing to higher prices at the pump,” AAA said in a press release Monday. “But rising oil prices are playing a major role in driving up gasoline prices. Consumers can expect the current pump trend to continue as long as crude prices rise.
